St. Mark Lutheran Church

Grades 1-8

Elementary education at St. Mark is available through 8th grade. Every subject is taught from a Christian perspective using a curriculum adhering to core standards and benchmarks approved by the state of Michigan as a minimum standard for academic excellence. Students in grades 3-8 take MEAP tests as a tool for comparison with area schools.

Our students also learn about the love of Jesus, Martin Luther and the Reformation, church history, and discipleship. Upper elementary classes use Luther’s Small Catechism for studies involving the Ten Commandments, creeds, and prayers.

Our comprehensive language arts program encompasses writing, grammar, literature and spelling. For math, we use the Saxon curriculum, which focuses on small group instruction, introducing individual students to new concepts when they’re ready for them, not necessarily when the whole class is. (It’s not unusual for 8th graders and in some cases 7th graders to receive Algebra I credit.)

We also offer Spanish, computer instruction, music, art and physical education through a cooperative arrangement with Grand Rapids Public Schools, in which certified teachers visit St. Mark on a set schedule.

What comes after 8th grade? Students who wish to continue in the Lutheran educational system can attend West Michigan Lutheran High School, located on 36th St. in Wyoming.
